OSHA Announces "TOP 10" Citations for FY2015

At the 2015 NSC Congress & Expo, OSHA announced the preliminary "Top 10" most frequently cited workplace safety violations for fiscal year 2015. Patrick Kapust, deputy director of OSHA’s Directorate of Enforcement Programs, presented the "Top 10" on the Expo floor.

“In injury prevention, we go where the data tell us to go,” said National Safety Council President and CEO Deborah A.P. Hersman. “The OSHA 'Top 10' list is a roadmap that identifies the hazards you want to avoid on the journey to safety excellence.”

The "Top 10" for FY 2015 are:
  • Fall Protection (1926.501) – 6,721
  • Hazard Communication (1910.1200) – 5,192
  • Scaffolding (1926.451) – 4,295
  • Respiratory Protection (1910.134) – 3,305

  • Machine Guarding (1910.212) – 2,295
  • Electrical – General Requirements (1910.303) – 1,973
  •
  • The resolution of these safety issues should be priority at every workplace in the U.S.  These are the items that cause the majority of the deaths and injuries and these same topics are those which OSHA Compliance Officers look for and find most often.

Classes for these issues are available at the CSC

Labor report shows drop in Hispanic worker fatalities

Labor report shows drop in Hispanic worker fatalities, rising deaths in construction and oil and gas industries.

Preliminary results from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries show that the rate of fatal work injuries in 2014 was unchanged from 2013, at about 3 per 100,000 full-time workers, but the total number of fatalities grew, reflecting an overall increase in employment. According to the data, 789 Hispanic workers died on the job in 2014, down from 817 in 2013. Meanwhile, the number of fatalities grew in the construction industry and the oil and gas extraction industry. OSHA continues extensive outreach and strong enforcement campaigns in both industries to counter these trends. In a statement on the BLS report, U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez said, "Far too many people are still killed on the job — 13 workers every day taken from their families tragically and unnecessarily. These numbers underscore the urgent need for employers to provide a safe workplace for their employees as the law requires."

Small Entity Compliance Guide for Confined Spaces in Construction

The Small Entity Compliance Guide for Confined Spaces in Construction is now published and available electronically at http://www.osha.gov/Publications/OSHA3825.pdf, and on the construction confined spaces webpage http://www.osha.gov/confinedspaces/index.html.

The guide is much easier to read and follow than regulatory text, and we hope it will be useful to your students and construction employers working to come into compliance with the new standard.
